Chords in Song Files

Chords must be enclosed in square brackets ('[' and ']'). They are of the form [A-G]{#|b}{m|dim|maj|sus}{digit}{/[A-G]{#|b}}. In other words, a chord is:

Here are some sample chords:

[A][F#][Bb][C/E]
[Gsus4][A7/C#][Dm/C][G#dim11/B]

Chords should be inserted in the lyrics where the chords change. Songsheet Generator will automatically put the chord above the letter that the chord appears before. So the following lyric:

[A]Twinkle twin[C#]kle [F#m]little star[D]

Will be automatically formatted to look something like this:

AC#F#mD
Twinkle twinkle little star

Songsheet Generator will never allow chords to overlap in the output; so chords which appear one right after the other, as in this example:

[A]What are [F#m]you[E][C#]

Will be automatically spaced apart in the output:

AF#m C#
What are you

Chord Definitions in Song Files

Songsheet Generator supports the ability to print and display chord grids for guitarists (i.e. fret board diagrams). Although a large number of common chord grids have been built into the Songsheet Generator executable, additional or alternate chord grids may be defined in song files, via the standard ChordPro chord grid definition syntax:

{define: <chord> base-fret <base> frets <Low-E> <A> <D> <G> <B> <E>}
For example, the following definition:
{define: E5 base-fret 7 frets 0 1 3 3 x x}
will produce this chord grid:

In addition, an extension to the standard format is recognized by Songsheet Generator, which adds fingering support to the grid. Fingerings are printed below the chord grids. The syntax for the fingering definition follows:

{define: <chord> base-fret <base> frets <Low-E> <A> <D> <G> <B> <E> fingers <Low-E> <A> <D> <G> <B> <E> key <KEY>}
For example, the following definition:
{define: A base-fret 1 frets 0 0 2 2 2 0 fingers - - 1 1 1 -}
will produce this chord grid:

Note: The first base-fret is 1 (one), not 0 (zero).
Also note: Chords grids defined in songs will override any built-in definitions.

The following chords have been built into Songsheet Generator. Songs using chords noted in this list will benefit automatically from the chord grids feature:
